Customer Engagement: the next transformation of marketing. McKinsey recently published an excellent article on how marketers' roles are changing as marketing evolves from a "push" to a "pull" resource. No longer does marketing control the message - it has evolved from "...a monologue to a dialog" at best.

Marketing increasingly needs to be en enterprise discipline in order to manage all of the consumer touch points. This reality is difficult to swallow for many tradition-bound companies where marketing and sales, service, product development, etc. operate on their own turf. The lesson is clear to these companies: change or be overwhelmed by competitors who can see beyond the present.

The new customer engagement is active in large companies. I am not seeing it so much elsewhere. In fact, as marketing becomes more complex I am seeing organizations retreat to the high-risk tactical approach with little measurement and less accountability.
